August Round-up

Ace reporter Clark Kent / Superman / AKA Stephen Lees missed the last two matched in August, but Gunnislake did not miss him!

On the 20th Gunnislake made the long trip to Newquay, and were asked to bowl on losing the toss.  Newquay batted steadily with their innings dominated by a 69 run partnership between Nick Smith and Mark Headland.  Both batsmen were dismissed one short of their half century.  A late flurry from Dave Sandland lifted Newquay to a final total of 169, with bowling honours evenly spread, but with two each for Lee Roberts and Mark Everett.

In response, Adam Emmerson continued his fine form of the previous week, racing to an unbeaten century off 84 balls.  He was ably supported by Brian Martin (40) and Andrew Dickerson, who finished 7 not out.  In an uncharacteristic innings, Andrew blocked away in order to give Adam his chance of a second consecutive unbeaten century.  Gunnislake cantered to the win in 23 overs as they cemented their second place in the League.

The following week Gunnislake hosted Saltash St Stephens at Hawkmoor.  Batting first Saltash St Stephens were dismissed for 156, despite a fine 72 from Mickey Stephens.  Dean Organ was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 26.  In reply Emmerson perished for a eager 5 runs (in his current form, very newsworthy – sorry Adam).  But fear not, Gunnislake are made of sterner stuff this year and Andrew Dickerson (50) and Dinesh Thirupuvanarajah (57 not out) both hit half centuries, as Gunnislake reached their target for the loss of only three wickets.

Forty points in the last two games was, however, the last to be won on the cricket field.  The final league match of the season, away at Ladock, was rained off.  So much for the driest summer on record!  This was the third time this season we fell victim to rain.  Six points each for the cancellation left Gunnislake with 268 points and second place in the league.

We think this will be sufficient to be promoted to Division 5 East next season, but re-arrangements in the divisions means we can’t be sure.  Watch this space!  Thanks to everyone who has played or helped this season.  We   have two friendly matched to come and then look forward to welcoming you back next year.
