The Tea Was Good

“Look on the Bright Side of Life” is a well known song from Monty Python, and for Gunnislake there were two bright spots: fulfilling the fixture and Werrington’s catering.  However, that is a tad gloomy and unfair on a couple of notable batting performances.

Gunnislake won the toss yet again (three bright spots!!!) and chose to bat on a hard and well prepared track.  Opening the batting were Monday’s star, the evergreen and venerable Barrie James, assisted on this occasion by fellow Cornwall Over 50s Ian Mill, on loan from Bude.  Mill soon perished slapping a wide ball to be caught at cover, but this brought Adam Emmerson to the crease.  Adam, son of former Gunnislake stalwart Gary, is it must be said, a little more than a chip off the old block: a batsman of quality that should perhaps be gracing a higher league.  And so he set about the young Werrington bowling with some gusto.  Nevertheless there was a lack of support from the other end and wickets fell regularly.  First Dan Howgill and then Tom Gribble started tying up the Gunnislake batsmen with too rarely seen spin bowling.  Only Adrian Cameron offered real support; after surviving an early shout for caught behind, he went on the whack the ball cleanly in an arc either side of the bowler (Adrian does not yet have the finesse of Adam).  Both Emmerson and Cameron ended their contributions on 41, while the rest of the team managed less between them.  With extras the total stuttered to 131, with Tom Gribble the stand out bowler, taking 5 wickets (all bowled) for just 15 runs.

131 always looked light, and so it proved.  Werrington clearly had other plans for the evening, knocking the runs off in a mere 17.5 overs for the loss of one wicket.  Adam Paynter finished with 51 not out and Ian Wills on 48 not out.  We shall draw a veil over the bowling.

Next week we regather to face the might of league leaders Buckland Monachorum.  Andrew Morris returns, but it will take something special to turn things around.  Nevertheless it’s a funny old game…….

Gunnislake 131 for 9 (3 points) lost to Werrington IV 134 for 1 (20 points) by nine wickets.
